Faceted Navigation provides the framework by which information assets can be explored, navigated and refined. In many ways, is a natural counterpart to search: keyword queries allow a user to establish an initial direction for their information need, and faceted navigation provides the means by which that direction can be clarified, refined and supported. Faceted navigation provides the dialogue by which users can understand a complex information space, learn how to navigate productively within it, and makes serendipitous discoveries in the process.

In this section, we provide guidance on some of the methods by which a faceted navigation dialogue can be established and supported.
