Search Within

Problem Summary

The "search within" function helps users to find a specific information asset within an existing result set.

Usages

  • When users prefer or expect keyword search refinement to reach specific information targets.
  • When the body of content is large or rich enough that the risk of returning zero results is minimized, and keyword search refinement offers a significant opportunity to help users quickly find very specific targets.

Constraints and Challenges

  • It's possible for "search within" to generate zero results, unlike faceted navigation.
  • If the search and "search within" functions are both accessed via a common search box, it can be challenging for the user to discover and adequately distinguish between the two functions.
  • If separate global search and "search within" boxes are located in close proximity and have similar treatments and/or labels, it can be challenging for users to understand the difference between the two.

Solution Elements

  1. If possible, provide separate search boxes for the search and "search within" functions.

  1. "Search within" acts as a type of refinement, so visually group the separate "search within" box with the faceted navigation menu and any selected facet values (e.g., shown within a breadbox).

  1. Use labels to differentiate between the search box and the "search within" box.

  1. Place a clearly labeled action button adjacent to the text box for the user to select to execute the query.

  1. The "search within" action must only apply to the current result set.

  1. Consider carefully whether or not to use auto-suggest functionality as part of the "search within" function.

  1. If the "global search" and "search within" functions share a common box, use a control such as a radio button or checkbox to toggle the function of the input.

  1. If the user toggles to the "search within" function, remove the current search query from the text field.

Cautions

Keeping the current search query in an editable search box and at the same time offering a "search within" capability can confuse the user.
